Modes of democratic representation in the EU

The emergence of plural representation in the European arena is analysed. Description of various modes of representation in the EU, partially overlapping: parliamentary representation in the EP; the various committees in national parliaments and inter-parliamentary cooperation and coordination; governments & regional representation in the European Council, the Council of the EU and the Committee of the Regions; bureaucratic representation embodied in the Commission; informal representation via lobby groups, NGOs and the Economic and Social Committee. How to involve the “affected”? The problem of democratic deficit and scenarios for institutional change will be focused on and critically debated (Assistant Prof. Sabrina Cavatorto).
