The difficulty of defining and addressing the question of democratic legitimacy in the EU is examined. To what extend can the role of national parliaments vis-à-vis EU affairs contribute to improving that legitimacy? Critical review of the most updated literature will be done by students together with the instructor (Assistant Prof. Sabrina Cavatorto).

Learning outcomes include:

• Awareness about the multidimensionality of democratic legitimacy in the EU.
• Knowledge about variations of EU-related practices among NPs in the member states.
• Capacity to read scientific literature and link theoretical arguments to empirical evidences.
